Call of Duty: Vanguard is slated for release in November and marks the return of the series to World War II

Science fiction writer Tochi Onyebuchi is working on the story, in addition to the Sledghammer storytelling team

Sledgehammer Games announced the next Call of Duty with the unveiling of Vanguard. The game will be released in November. The shooter takes place during the Second World War and offers a “historically inspired” single player campaign as well as a multiplayer mode and integration with Call of Duty: Zombies and Warzone.

The single player campaign forms the core of Vanguard. It focuses on the origin of the special forces and is told from several angles. Science fiction writer Tochi Onyebuchi is working on the story, in addition to the Sledghammer storytelling team.

According to Sledgehammer, the narrative will include untold stories from the multinational heroes of Task Force One who changed history and set the stage for the special forces. It will also feature characters from the real world, including Lt. Polina Petrova or Lady Death, based on the Soviet sniper Lyudmila Pavlichenko.

There will also be a 20-map multiplayer outside of the campaign. One of the game modes is Champion Hill, where players can duel alone or in groups of two or three. Zombies mode, developed by Black Ops studio Treyarch, is linked to the previous undead story of Black Ops Cold War.

Raven Software is also developing a Vanguard card for Warzone, the Battle Royale spinoff. The new map will be released later this year and will be accompanied by a new anti-cheat system. The crossover has been described as a new metaverse combining Vanguard, Modern Warfare and Black Ops Cold War.

Call of Duty: Vanguard will be out on November 5th and will be available for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X / S, and PC.

The announcement follows that Sledgehammer’s parent company Activision Blizzard has come under fire following a sexual harassment lawsuit filed by California. Since then, employees have held work stoppages while several high-profile developers, including President J. Allen Brack, have left the studio.
