The proposed $ 40 billion purchase of British chip designer ARM by US group Nvidia Corp is likely to be the subject of lengthy investigation after a UK regulator finds that the deal could affect competition and weaken rivals.

The UK’s Competition and Markets Authority said the acquisition could raise “significant competition concerns”.

Nvidia was said to have offered remedial measures to mitigate the effects, but the CMA didn’t think they would address their concerns.

“The CMA determined that the merger should be transferred to an in-depth phase 2 investigation for competitive reasons,” it said.
