Google is today launching the “budget” Pixel 5a 5G phone in select markets after it was announced back in April. The phone is unlikely to come to India. Just like its predecessor, the Pixel 4a 5G. It shares the same design and hardware and dual cameras, but it comes with a bigger screen, battery, and official IP rating in an even cheaper package. So, that’s nice for those who might have been watching.
The Pixel 5a 5G launched in the US at a price of $ 449, which is roughly equivalent to Rs 33,500. This applies to a version with 6 GB of RAM and 128 GB of storage. The phone will only be available in one additional market, Japan, as previously confirmed by Google. Shipping begins on August 26th.

There are broadly three upgrades to talk about. The Pixel 5a 5G has a bigger screen. That’s 6.34 inches (6.2 inches for the Pixel 4a 5G). The panel is still OLED and the resolution remains at 1080p. The refresh rate is still limited at 60 Hz. Under the hood is the same Qualcomm Snapdragon 765G system-on-chip, paired with 6 Gig of RAM and 128 GB of storage. This is not expandable.
The Pixel 5a 5G runs on Android 11 from the start and is entitled to three years of guaranteed operating system and security updates.
On the back there are the same dual cameras, a combination of a 12.2 MP main and 16 MP ultra-wide-angle camera. It also has the same 8 MP front camera.
The battery receives a bump. It’s 4,680mAh. With the Pixel 4a 5G that was 3,885 mAh. It supports 18W fast charging. The Pixel 5a 5G is also the first Pixel A-series phone to receive an official IP rating. It’s IP67 certified.

The design stays the same, which means that the phone is made from a soft-touch metal unibody with a fingerprint reader attached to the back. Google will only sell it in one color, which is black.
The launch of the Pixel 5a 5G comes close on the heels of Google, which is touting its own system-on-chip, also known as the Tensor, and the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro, the first phones to run on the custom SoC. Again, it is very unlikely that Google will launch them in India.
