Sea’s Shopee, headquartered in Singapore, has launched a seller recruiting campaign to sell on what it called “Shopee India” and is increasing the hiring in the country according to Youtube videos and job postings.
“Shopee is coming to India!” announces a video released in early August that promises free shipping and no commission fees to sellers and buyers, and that is linked to a seller recruitment form.
A company source said the company is cautiously preparing to expand operations in India with no final start date set.
Sea has a team in India but does not currently provide ecommerce services in the country.
Shopee has posted a number of job advertisements in India in the past few weeks for positions ranging from seller operations to compliance but has not launched a localized app or website.
A Sea spokesman did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
The Southeast Asian group, valued at $ 172 billion (approximately Rs.12,60,615 billion), has already had success in India with its Free Fire game, which it describes as the country’s top-selling mobile phone game.
Shopee’s cautious move to India follows a successful expansion into Latin America, with the e-commerce company launching in Chile, Mexico and Colombia in early 2021 after becoming the most downloaded app in Brazil.
According to market researchers, Shopee is already the dominant player in e-commerce in Southeast Asia and had worldwide sales of 1.2 billion US dollars (approx. 8,800 billion rupees) in the quarter ended June 30th.
