Biden’s New Vaccine Mandates for 100 Million Americans: What You Should Know

    Immediately after President Joe Biden’s announcement of vaccine mandates on September 9, the plan faced several challenges, including from Republicans in Congress and local and state officials. The new White House policy would Prescribe vaccines for all federal employees and contractors doing business with the federal government and for medical personnel in Medicare and Medicaid facilities. In addition, the plan instructs the Department of Labor to require all companies with 100 or more employees to have their employees either vaccinated or tested weekly.

    As the pace of COVID-19 vaccination slows down and the Delta variant In the United States, Biden is trying to pressure about 80 million more Americans to get vaccinated. The approach could reach around two-thirds of the US workforce, or up to 100 million people.     Who would fall under the new federal vaccination mandate?

    Earlier this month, Biden announced “a new plan to see more Americans vaccinated to combat those who block public health,” and launched his government’s “Path out of the Pandemic” program, which aims to do so to increase vaccination rates by making vaccinations mandatory in the public and private sectors. About 80 million Americans eligible for a COVID-19 vaccine have not been vaccinated.

    Here is who needs to be vaccinated according to the schedule:

    • Employers with 100 or more employees must either have their employees fully vaccinated or get tested weekly to get to work. Biden said OSHA, the labor department’s health and safety agency, will implement the requirements, which will affect more than 80 million workers. Companies are waiting for more details in a formal rule to be released in the coming weeks.
    • Federal employees and employees of contractors who do business with the federal government must be vaccinated.
    • The Department of Health and Human Services requires vaccinations in head-start programs as well as in schools at the Department of Defense and the Bureau of Indian Education.
    • Healthcare workers who receive Medicare and Medicaid reimbursements, including hospitals and home health authorities, must also be fully vaccinated.

    The president also urged entertainment venues to require proof of vaccination or a negative test to enter their facilities.

    What is the resistance to the mandates?

    In response, Republican governors are threatening to oppose the government’s new policies. Senior Republican on the House of Representatives committee who oversees health policy, Cathy McMorris Rodgers, said Biden “used fear, control and mandate.” The Republican National Committee has vowed to sue the Biden government over the vaccine mandate.

    Some companies covered by the new vaccine mandate face challenges and questions regarding compliance and implementation with the policy, according to The Wall Street Journal. For example, companies need to find out who pays the cost of screening unvaccinated employees and whether they can approve exemptions.

    Which companies have vaccination requirements for employees?

    Several companies have announced plans for mandatory vaccinations, including airlines, cruise lines, concert halls, health facilities and restaurants. Some of the requirements may include masking and testing guidelines; others may only apply to employees traveling internationally, working in the office, or having face-to-face interactions with customers.     What about vaccination mandates for the US military and US police?

    In August, the Pentagon announced that all 1.3 million active duty members must receive COVID-19 vaccinations. The policy applies to all members of the armed forces on active duty or on the standby reserve, including the National Guard. The Department of Defense will make Pfizer shots available at bases around the world. Service personnel who received the Moderna or Johnson & Johnson vaccine are still considered fully vaccinated. There are a few exceptions, including one for religious reasons, but these are not often granted.

    In response to law enforcement agencies requiring vaccination in several cities, police organizations have openly spoken out against vaccine mandates. In Oregon, for example, police and fire departments are suing against compulsory vaccination by the state.

    What about cities, federal states and universities with mandates?

    Several states, including California and New York, require government employees to be vaccinated. In addition, several cities, such as New York City and San Francisco. require proof of vaccination for indoor dining, gyms, and other indoor activities. Starting October, Los Angeles County will require proof of vaccination to enter indoor bars, nightclubs, breweries, and wineries.

    Nine states, as well as the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico, have vaccination requirements for staff in K-12 schools.

    More than 400 colleges and universities also require vaccines for students who want to take in-person tuition.

    Yes sir. A federal vaccination mandate is not new. In 1977, for example, the federal government started an initiative to vaccinate up to 90% of the country’s children against seven diseases:

    • measles
    • mumps
    • whooping cough
    • poliomyelitis
    • rubella
    • tetanus

    All 50 states require specific vaccines for students, with exceptions varying from state to state. Most school requirements are based on the CDC’s Childhood Immunization Schedule.

    Which states prohibit vaccination requirements?

    At least 20 states, including Arkansas, Florida, and Texas, prohibit vaccination evidence. This means that companies, schools and local government institutions cannot enforce a vaccination mandate. (The same applies Face masks required.) The prohibitions came into force either through laws or ordinances.
