According to a report, WhatsApp will be spotted working on a new section that will allow users to manage their chat backup size and exclude certain content like documents and photos from their cloud backup. The change could initially be limited to Android devices and may work with the backups that are stored on Google Drive. WhatsApp is also working separately on a feature called Community that could help provide a better group talking experience. Both the new backup size management and the community function still have to be introduced for beta tests.
In a report, WhatsApp beta tracker WABetaInfo said the instant messaging app is working on a special “Manage Backup Size” section so that users can manage their backup size before uploading it to the cloud.
WhatsApp for Android Beta 184.108.40.206 seems to have some hints of the update. A screenshot was also shared by WABetaInfo to suggest how the new section would allow users to manage their backup size by excluding photos, audio, or documents from their backups. However, beta testers have yet to see the changes at the end as the change is said to be currently in development.
Currently, WhatsApp does not provide any backup size details to users from its app. However, users have the option to exclude videos from their cloud backups.
While WhatsApp has not yet released any official details on how users can manage their backup size, it is believed that the change was made to limit backup packages before they are uploaded to the cloud. This could be due to a change in Google Drive storage for WhatsApp backups.
Google Drive currently offers unlimited storage for WhatsApp backups, although it ran out of unlimited storage for photos earlier this year. A similar step could be done for WhatsApp backups in the future.
WhatsApp also implements end-to-end encryption for cloud backups. Last week, beta testing of the security-oriented update started on both Android and iOS devices.
In addition to the new backup area, WhatsApp was discovered while working on a community function. XDA developers have found some new strings of code related to the functionality in WhatsApp for Android beta version 220.127.116.11. The strings indicate that the community function works similarly to the existing Google Groups offer in the app.
One of the strings found in the beta app suggests that community and groups can coexist in the messaging app.
WABetaInfo says the community feature would give users a way to better organize their WhatsApp groups. However, it may not work on its own space for group conversations – unlike groups on WhatsApp and other community-driven features available on Facebook and Twitter.
