The Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro are expected to receive four major operating system updates and five years of security patches. Google typically provides operating system updates and security patches to their Pixel devices for three years, while most other Android manufacturers give their phones two platform updates and security patches for three years. The trend seems to be changing this time with the arrival of the Google Pixel 6 series. Google may be able to leverage its custom tensor SoC to provide software updates over a longer period of time.
A tipster who goes by the pseudonym Snoopy on Twitter has suggested that the Pixel 6 series will receive four operating system updates and five years of security patches. Longer software support was previously indicated in the marketing material from tipster Evan Blass.
“Pixel ships with at least 5 years of updates to make it more secure over time,” read the text from the leaked material.
Google currently promises to provide updates to Pixel users for at least three years. However, it does not guarantee updates or continued support after the last major update was rolled out.
By allegedly extending the software update cycle for its Pixel 6 series, Google would take on Samsung, which only promised earlier this year to offer security updates on select Galaxy devices for at least four years. Xiaomi also announced in September that its flagship Xiaomi 11T series will receive security updates for four years.
Google uses its proprietary Tensor SoC on the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro instead of a third-party processor. This could be the reason why it could now offer a longer software update cycle.
Custom Silicon is already helping Apple to provide regular software updates for its iPhone models for an average of three to four years. The Cupertino-based company is even installing security patches on some of its outdated models, including the iPhone 5s, which launched back in 2013.
Full details on how many software updates we’ll see for the Pixel 6 series will likely be revealed when it launches on October 19th.
