macOS Monterey is now being introduced as a free upgrade: what’s new, how can I download it

macOS Monterey, Apple’s newest operating system, began rolling out to all Mac computers on Monday. Unveiled at the company’s WWDC 2021 in Cupertino in June, Monterey is a successor to last year’s macOS Big Sur. Among the many new features, the latest macOS brings a redesigned Safari and “exciting new” FaceTime updates. It also offers handy features like Universal Control, Focus, and Shortcuts. Apple is primarily focusing on using multiple devices with macOS Monterey as it promises a smoother experience than its predecessors.

macOS Monterey: What’s New

macOS Monterey doesn’t quite follow in the footsteps of its predecessor Big Sur. While Big Sur introduced a facelift at the interface level, macOS Monterey is more focused on optimizing the overall user experience. Monterey’s Universal Control feature encourages users to get involved with more Apple products and enables seamless use of different devices like an iPad or MacBook or iMac or even an Apple Pencil – all at the same time. For example, if you sketch with your Apple Pencil on an iPad or take a note about a Keynote presentation, it will automatically appear on your Mac computer.

To promote even more interconnectivity, macOS Monterey is also bringing AirPlay to Mac computers. So now you can play your favorite songs over the fast, wireless connection on your powerful iMac speakers. Of course, you can also share content between Apple devices via AirPlay.

For those who have a lot of FaceTime, Apple now offers spatial audio support for the chats, along with a fresh grid view that automatically shows who is speaking for everyone to understand. Chats are now also free of most background noise thanks to the new voice isolation function on the microphones, which puts your voice “in the center” even during calls. FaceTime’s SharePlay feature also allows users to share items such as movies or projects with friends over a phone call.

Safari users can now enjoy a clearer user interface with the new tab groups feature, which helps to save and manage multiple tabs under a single title. Tab groups are also seamlessly synced across devices to simplify workflow.

MacOS Monterey’s Shortcuts feature works similarly to its iPhone or iPad counterparts and helps automate tasks on a Mac computer. Users can edit shortcuts to suit their own tasks and needs.
