Elon Musk praises Starlink India director Sanjay Bhargava and says he deserves credit for PayPal’s success

Elon Musk has commended Starlink India’s director, Sanjay Bhargava, for his ambitious project to bring high-speed internet to rural areas, and said he has “great respect” for Bhargava. Musk said Bhargava deserves a lot of credit for PayPal’s success and that he is now helping SpaceX support rural communities in India. Bhargava, who last month led SpaceX’s satellite broadband operations in India, previously worked with Musk on the electronic payments company. SpaceX’s Starlink operates a constellation of satellites in low earth orbit that broadcast the Internet to the ground. The company plans to launch its services in India soon.

Musk’s praise for Bhargava came in response to a report on how SpaceX plans to bring Starlink internet to rural India. “Sanjay deserves a lot of credit for making X / PayPal successful. Now SpaceX is helping to support rural communities in India. Much respect, “Musk tweeted.

Bhargava and his wife Anita Kapur Bhargava shared SpaceX’s plan to roll out Starlink broadband service in rural India next year in a video presentation. It is currently in the process of obtaining regulatory approvals. SpaceX plans to provide 100 Starlink hardware kits – 20 for schools in Delhi and 80 in a rural district near Delhi – free of charge. Their representatives will then work with NITI Aayog to identify 12 rural districts, three from each region – North, South, East and West – and provide internet services there. By the end of 2022, the company plans to operate at least 200,000 Starlink devices, 160,000 (80 percent) of which in rural areas. Anita Bhargava said she was helping Starlink pro bono.

Musk previously said that SpaceX is “figuring out” the regulatory approval process in India.

Starlink is in beta testing in the regions currently available. It claims to offer latency between 20 and 40 milliseconds and speeds from 50 Mbps to 150 Mbps. India could prove to be a huge broadband market for SpaceX as the vast majority of rural India does not have internet access.
