Non-fungible tokens (NFTs) are gaining traction in gaming, and the MetalCore Foundation, a video game publisher founded by developers who previously worked at Activision, Disney, Lucas Films, and Midway, among others, has a new open -World game launched that prominently features NFTs. The game called MetalCore is a multiplayer fighting game that aims to combine traditional game mechanics and GameFi-driven blockchain technology. According to reports, MetalCore will host its first NFT pre-sale in January 2022, while a private alpha is expected for limited PC gamers in early 2022.
The game developed by Studio 369 follows a proven formula, followed by a number of existing blockchain games. MetalCore will allow players to collect rare weapons, cosmetic nets and skins that can be used in combat and traded on the open market as NFTs. Players have the opportunity to earn in-game rewards and become virtual landowners, where they can mine in-game assets and generate tax revenue.
A short trailer of the game shows robot-like war machines that are reminiscent of Titanfall, in a strange environment and avatars that control these war machines. The first-look trailer also gives a glimpse into the in-game items that are likely to be traded as NFTs.
GameFi technology is already among the most sought-after in the crypto eco-space, and early investors can expect game-related collectibles to power the virtual economy. As the name suggests, GameFi is essentially an intersection between Decentralized Finance (DeFi), NFTs, and the gaming industry, and it attracts a lot of attention from the largest gaming guilds as it is most commonly used to make money.
Two of the biggest titles in blockchain gaming right now are Axie Infinity and Decentraland – both ecosystems powered by GameFi.
Speaking of play-to-earn, Ubisoft spoke during a recent earnings call about its intention to implement a play-to-earn blockchain model in the future. Whether Ubisoft plans to add NFTs to the reward structure of its existing open world franchises or to develop completely new blockchain games remains to be learned.
