Xiaomi introduces the Loop LiquidCool technology for phones with the double heat dissipation of conventional chambers


Xiaomi announced a new technology called Loop LiquidCool on Friday November 5th, which is designed to ensure efficient cooling of smartphone processors. The heat dissipation method introduced by the Chinese smartphone giant is designed to separate the circulations of hot air and coolant, reducing the problems associated with cell phone heat convention. Inspired by cooling systems used in aerospace engineering, Loop LiquidCool technology is a new take on the traditional vapor chamber. It works based on the capillary effect that draws liquid coolant to the heat source, vaporizes it, and then distributes the heat to a cooler area. The company plans to pack the Loop LiquidCool technology into its smartphones in the second half of 2022.

Xiaomi presented the new Loop LiquidCool technology in a blog post. The company claims that the new technology provides twice the cooling capacity compared to traditional vapor chambers (VC) solutions. Loop LiquidCool technology comprises an annular heat pipe system that includes an evaporator, condenser, refill chamber, and gas and liquid pipes. When the smartphone is busy, the refrigerant in the evaporator evaporates into gas. The gas and air flow then diffuses to the condenser, where the gas further condenses into liquid. These liquids are absorbed and collected by small fibers in the refill chamber, making it a self-sufficient system.

The new technology uses the same method as VC liquid cooling, says Xiaomi. Nevertheless, the conventional VC systems do not have separate channels for gases and liquids. In the Loop LiquidCool technology, the pump has a special gas pipe design that is supposed to reduce the air resistance by 30 percent and increase the heat transfer capacity by up to 100 percent.

A Tesla valve microstructure is said to have one-way circulation to prevent heat from moving backwards and to increase the heat dissipation ability of standard vapor chambers.

Xiaomi also demonstrated the new method on a custom Xiaomi MIX 4 by replacing the original vapor chamber with the new Loop LiquidCool Technology solution. The company claimed that for 30 minutes of Genshin Impact at 60 frames per second (fps) and maximum graphics settings, the heating didn’t exceed 47.7 degrees Celsius and the processor was 8.6 degrees Celsius lower than the standard version.
