Morbius release date postponed to April 1st due to concerns with Omicron

The release date of Morbius has been postponed by Sony Pictures. The superhero film, led by Jared Leto, will not be released later this month on January 28th due to concerns about the fast-spreading Omicron variant of the novel coronavirus that has prolonged the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Instead, Morbius – based on the Marvel Comics character of the same name – has been postponed to April 1st. As a result, Morbius is no longer the first superhero movie of 2022. That honor now applies (perhaps temporarily, depending on Omicron) to Robert Pattinson-led The Batman, due out now on March 4th. But could 2020 be again in 2022?

This is the fifth delay for Morbius due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Before the coronavirus sent the world into lockdown in March 2020, the Morbius film should be released at the end of July 2020. Morbius was moved first to March 2021, then October 2021, before being driven further back into January 2022. Now it won’t be released until April 2022. This is also a consequence of Sony Pictures wanting to stay away from its own publications. The Tom Hardy starer Venom: Let There Be Carnage took this slot in October 2021, followed by Ghostbusters: Afterlife in November 2021 and then Spider-Man: No Way Home in December 2021 – all in theaters.

The latter is especially noteworthy as the new Spider-Man movie continues to break pandemic and non-pandemic box office records. In addition to being the greatest movie released during the COVID-19 era, Spider-Man: No Way Home is also the twelfth greatest movie of all time (and the third highest-grossing Hollywood movie of all time in India). That suggests that audiences are willing to take risks for movies they really want to see. Obviously, Morbius isn’t that excited. Additionally, Omicron is a much bigger threat than it was last month. And Sony Pictures is clearly not ready to gamble and potentially lose money.

With Morbius out of the way, the limelight will now shift to other big Hollywood films. The next big title is the Agatha Christie adaptation Death on the Nile (February 11th) with Gal Gadot, Armie Hammer, Tom Bateman, Annette Bening, Russell Brand, Ali Fazal, Rose Leslie, Dawn French, Sophie Okonedo, Jennifer Saunders, Letitia Wright and Director Kenneth Branagh. How long will Disney wait to pull the plug? Sony Pictures will be back in focus with its long-elaborate adaptation of the Uncharted PlayStation video game – led by Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg – currently slated for February 18.

On location, the highly anticipated action drama RRR – by Baahubali director SS Rajamouli – has already given up its release date on January 7th. RRR is now undated. Meanwhile, the next two big titles, Prabhas-led romantic drama Radhe Shyam (January 14) and historical action drama Prithviraj (January 21) by Akshay Kumar are sticking to their theatrical release dates for now.

In addition to Leto as Dr. Michael Morbius, who gives himself power after accidentally contracting a form of transgenic vampirism, the Morbius film also plays Matt Smith as Morbius’ friend Loxias Crown, who suffers from the same blood disease as Morbius, Adria Arjona as Morbius ‘Scientist fiancée Martine Bancroft, Jared Harris as Morbius’ mentor, Al Madrigal as FBI agent who hunts Morbius, Tyrese Gibson as overpowering FBI agent who also hunts Morbius, who has a “high-tech weapon-grade arm”, and Michael Keaton returning as Adrian Toomes / Vulture from Spider-Man: Homecoming. Yes, Morbius is part of Sony’s Spider-Man universe alongside the Venom films.

Morbius is now set to hit cinemas worldwide on April 1st. In India, Morbius will be available in English, Hindi, Tamil and Telugu.
